What Is A PABX?

A Private Automatic Branch Exchange (PABX) is an automatic telephone switching system within a Private Enterprise. A few years ago, these systems were referred to as Private Branch Exchanges (PBX) and required the use of a live operator.

PABX OVERVIEW

A PABX allows an organization to create its own in-house telephone network. The function of a PABX is the same whether it is an analog or IP system. The PABX is programmed with all the extension numbers that correspond to each and every phone that is used in the building and can switch or transfer incoming calls to any of these extensions. In most cases, a receptionist answers all the incoming calls and routes the calls via the PABX to the person the caller wishes to talk to. Most PABX systems have a function of switching calls automatically by playing a recording that greets the caller and prompts them to select their desired extension. When the caller indicates their desired extension, the PABX makes the switch and stands by for the next call.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

Before a PABX is installed, there are certain considerations that have to be made. This gives guidelines on what type of PABX to install and the overall cost implications:

  • Number Of Extension Lines – The number of telephone handsets that are going to be used has to be known.
  • Number Of PSTN Lines – The Public Switched Telephone Network lines. In most organizations, the Managing Director and CEO, for example, will usually have their own dedicated direct lines to their offices.
  • Type Of System –  It is up to the company to decide what type of system they want to be installed whether it is an Analog, Hybrid or IP based system. This selection usually depends on the functions that the organization is looking to obtain from their telephone system.
CONCLUSION

It is evident that PABX systems can be of great use to any business.  Exponent Technologies sells, rents and leases PABX systems and offer special deals. Some of our deals include renting out the PABX unit for a quarterly fee, signing up for a lease agreement that allows the client to pay a monthly fee to pay off their PABX system.
